Safety in the workplace is important as it ensures the well-being and protection of all employees. There are several ways to ensure this, including regular safety training, implementing Occupational Safety and Health policies, and making changes in line with policy differences. One of the most effective ways to ensure workplace safety is to use safety signs.

The International Organization for Standardization defines a safety sign as a sign which gives a general safety message, obtained by a combination of a colour and geometric shape and which, by the addition of a graphical symbol, gives a particular safety message. Their purpose is to draw attention rapidly to objects and situations affecting safety and health, and to gain rapid understanding of a specific message. The following is done in line with ISO 3864:2011 and ISO 7010:2019.

The safety signs are divided into 5 colour categories depending on the message being conveyed – prohibition, mandatory requirements, warning, safe condition and fire safety directions. The 5 categories are as follows:

1. Prohibition Signs

First, prohibition signs are designed to indicate actions that are not allowed for safety reasons.
They are characterized by a red circle with a diagonal bar on a white background. These signs are crucial for preventing behaviours that could lead to accidents or hazards.
The examples below mean:
P002 – No smoking
P003 – No open flame, fire, open ignition source and smoking prohibited
P010 – Do not touch
P020 – Do not use lift in the event of fire

2. Mandatory Signs

Secondly, mandatory signs specify actions that people must do to stay safe, ensuring specific safety procedures are followed.
They are characterized by white symbols within a solid blue circle. By promoting compliance with protective measures, they help reduce risk and encourage a culture of safety in the workplace.
The examples below mean:
M004 – Eye protection
M011 – Wash your hands
M016 – Mask
M018 – Safety harness

3. Warning Signs

Thirdly, warning signs draw attention to potential hazards or obstacles requiring special attention that could cause harm if ignored.
They are characterized by a yellow triangle with a black border and symbols. Their role is to elicit caution, heighten awareness and help workers take preventive measures before encountering danger.
The examples below mean:
W002 – Warning, explosive material
W009 – Warning, biological hazard
W011 – Warning, slippery surface
W023 – Warning, corrosive substances

4. Safe Condition Signs

Fourth, safe conditions point out safety facilities, equipment or escape routes that can be used during emergencies.
They are characterized by a green rectangle or square with white symbols. They ensure that anyone can find essential safety resources when they are needed most.
The examples below mean:
E002 – Emergency exit (right hand)
E003 – First aid
E007 – Evacuation assembly point
E010 – Automated external heart defibrillator

5. Fire Safety Signs

Lastly, fire safety signs are critical for fire protection and emergency response.
They are characterised by a red rectangle or square with white symbols. In the event of a fire, they help people to act quickly and confidently by providing clear directions to firefighting equipment and fire-related emergency points.
The examples below mean:
F001 – Fire extinguisher
F002 – Fire hose reel
F003 – Fire ladder
F016 – Fire blanket

All the categories are useful in ensuring a safe work environment.
